Dark scars can develop on black skin after a cut or other injury, and this is known as postinflammatory hyperpigmentation. The American Academy of Dermatology states that while people with all skin tones can develop this kind of scarring, it is more common among those with darker skin. Scarring is part of your body's healing process. Most scars lessen over time, but you can use at-home remedies to speed the fading process. No magical treatments will wipe out your scars immediately, but some can help them become less noticeable.

Step 1

Wash your legs with a cleanser or body wash to get rid of any dirt or oil. Dry your legs with a soft towel, and then apply a lightening cream with hydroquinone. Smart Skin Care notes that this medicated ingredient will help fade dark scars by blocking an enzyme that produces melanin, the pigment that darkens skin. It is available in over-the-counter creams or your doctor can give you a prescription-strength version. Smooth the cream over your scars, and wash your hands off when you finish.

Step 2

At least five minutes after applying lightening cream, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen before you go outside. DermNet NZ states that this will help keep the sun and ultraviolet rays from darkening your scars. Slather your skin with a product that promises to protect you from both UVA and UVB rays, and allow it to soak in before going outdoors.

Step 3

Cover your scars with clothing or conceal them with makeup while you wait for them to fade. Choose a foundation or concealer that matches your skin tone. Put some of the makeup on a flat brush, and then dab it onto your scar. Blend with the brush or fingertips, and repeat this until you achieve your desired coverage. Set the makeup by dusting on a translucent powder.
