Weight training belts, often simply called "weight belts," protect the lower back, assist you in lifting heavier weights and are mainly used when lifting overhead or for squats and dead lifts. Wearing a weight belt while lifting prevents hyperextension of the back; weight belts are useful if you have had a previous back injury. The two types of weight belts are powerlifting and Olympic-style belts. Powerlifting belts are made of leather and have a uniform width. Olympic-style belts are wider in the back than the front, which allows for greater mobility during lifts.
Harbinger 5-Inch Firmfit Belt
The Harbinger 5-inch Firmfit Belt is a lightweight, flexible weight belt. It is 5 inches in the back and narrows to a 3-inch support strap overlay for extra lower-back and abdominal protection. It is a consistently popular seller. The sizes available are small, medium, large and extra large. As of 2010, it costs around $20 to $30. This weight belt is designed for comfort and flexibility. The support structure is sufficient for average weightlifters, but may not be enough support for serious or extreme power-lifters.
