Potassium Deficiency Symptoms in the Legs

If the amount of potassium in your blood falls below 2.5 milliequivalents per liter or mEq/L, you may be diagnosed with potassium deficiency, according to MayoClinic.com. Potassium deficiency, also called hypokalemia, may be caused by a number of different medical conditions, including chronic diarrhea, eating disorders and kidney failure. Potassium deficiency symptoms can manifest in any region of your body but may be most apparent in your legs. If you develop potassium deficiency symptoms, seek care from your primary medical provider.

Leg Discomfort

You may experience leg discomfort as a symptom of low potassium levels, the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center reports. Sensations of tingling, numbness or pins-and-needles may develop up and down your legs or across other regions of your body. These sensations may result in leg twitching or muscle twitching.

Leg Weakness Or Paralysis

Leg weakness or paralysis may occur as a symptom of hypokalemia, according to Drugs.com. Muscle weakness or paralysis that affects your legs may make it difficult for you to stand or walk about normally. Weakness or paralysis may also affect other parts of your body, such as your arms or respiratory tract. Consult your doctor immediately if you develop persistent or severe muscle weakness or paralysis. Sudden weakness may be a sign of alternate health issues, such as multiple sclerosis or stroke.

Additional Symptoms

If your body doesn't have enough potassium, you may develop additional symptoms that do not affect your legs. Low potassium may cause heart rate irregularities, excessive fatigue and constipation, MedlinePlus warns. You may also experience frequent urination, increased thirst, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or severe breathing difficulties. Seek prompt care from your medical provider if you experience any of these symptoms of potassium deficiency to ensure you receive appropriate treatment and care.
