Atkins Diet Phase 1

Phase 1 of the Atkins Diet is known as the induction phase. This is the most restricted of all phases and requires major changes in diet and attitude toward food.

Time Frame

The induction phase of the diet is originally planned as a two-week plan, but it can be extended to last up to 28 days.

Foods Allowed

All types of meats, fish, fowls and eggs are allowed. Only a few types of cheese are allowed, including mozzarella, blue cheese, Swiss and cream cheese, cheddar and goat cheese. Only green vegetables are allowed.

Prohibited Foods

Starchy vegetables and fruits are excluded--as are all sweets and grains, including whole grains. Alcohol and caffeine are also banned, although decaf coffee is acceptable.

Basic Rules

The maximum allowed number of carbohydrates is 20 grams. Only artificial sweeteners can be used. No meals should be skipped. No chewing gum or cough/sore throat tablets are allowed.

Side Effects

Carb withdrawal symptoms are common and include headaches, fatigue and nausea. Weakness and dizziness can make exercising difficult.
