Las Vegas can be more than the Strip and all the activities designed to take money from visitors. For those looking to take in some inexpensive or free things, Vegas has much to offer. Some are things you can take advantage of as others pay money and the businesses are attempting to lure you into spending money, others are just your typical free types of activities.

Bike Riding

One of the best free activities in Vegas is bike riding. With the desert surrounding the city in every direction there are many trails to take in. Most are long-distance street trails, such as Vegas-to-Lake Mead or out to Blue Diamond. For those who like a challenge, such as climbing a difficult hill, Kyle Canyon Hill offers an intensive climb.

Free Activities on the Strip

On the Strip, there are many sites to take in for free. There is the aquarium at the Mirage that's open 24 hours, seven days a week. You can make this trip a nice walk up and down the avenue and continue to take in all the free attractions. The fountain at the Bellagio dances to music every hour. Planet Hollywood offers computer-generated thunderstorms in the mall every hour during the week and half-hour on the weekend. Or watch the drama at the Atlantis Water Show in Caesars Palace every hour from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. These are just a few examples of the many free attractions on the Strip that you can turn into a several-mile walk.

Lorenzi Park

Lorenzi Park in Las Vegas rests on 60 acres, with several softball/baseball fields. You could tour the rose garden or take a jog on one of the many jogging paths. As one of the oldest parks in Vegas, it remains a natural oasis with picnic and barbecue areas for the entire family to enjoy.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area encompasses 196,000 acres of Mojave Desert lands. With more than 25 miles of hiking trails, there are plenty of places to explore. There are 2,000-foot sandstone cliffs where many enjoy rock climbing with many routes mapped through the Keystone Thrust Fault.

Lake Mead Recreational Area

Just 20 miles southeast of Las Vegas, you can kick back in the Lake Mead Recreational Area. Around the area you have the Colorado River, Lake Mead, and Lake Mohave as well. If you own a kayak or canoe, you have free reign to paddle around the area experiencing the coves, canyons and desert landscape surrounding the lake. If you wish to launch below Hoover Dam you must acquire a permit, but other than that it is free to spend time on the lake. You can even scuba dive, which is also free if you have your equipment.
