San Francisco is full of healthy and fun activities to keep you fit. Go hiking along one of the many area trails, get in some exercise in a local gym, walk in the park or go for a bike ride. You can even challenge yourself and go mountain biking on one of the area trails. Or you can educate your mind at a local museum. No matter what activity you choose, you are sure to stay healthy and fit.

Hiking

A great way to stay healthy and fit is to go hiking along one of the San Francisco area's hiking trails. Try the Bay Area Ridge Trail and Anza Trail Loop. This 3.4-mile trail will take you past the San Francisco National Cemetery and Mountain Lake, with interesting scenery that includes several historic structures within Mountain Lake Park.

The 4-mile Fort Point-Baker Beach Coast Trail loops between Fort Point and Baker Beach and features relics from the Gold Rush period prior to the Civil War until World War II. You will see a number of bunkers and gun batteries that were built to protect the San Francisco harbor.

Biking

The summer is also a perfect time to go mountain biking. Try the Mount Sutro Out-and-Back Trail. This 3.56-mile trail dates to about 1900 and is part of an old logging trail. Get back into nature as you ride this trail, which can also connect to the Mount Davidson ride.

During your ride at Mount Sutro, continue to the Mountain Davidson Trail–a 1.6-mile trail that rises 925 feet in elevation and offers beautiful views of San Francisco. Ride through beautiful forests while working your way up the steep Dalewood Way.

Indoor Fitness

If the weather doesn't cooperate during your visit to San Francisco, you can still stay healthy and fit by working out in one of the city's many gyms. Try Bally Total Fitness, which features plenty of cardio equipment, free weights, a sauna, an indoor pool and a whirlpool. Group exercise classes include Pilates, yoga and reaction cycling.

At the Pacific Heights Health Club, you have the option of using cardio equipment, strength training equipment and free weights, or taking group classes in Pilates and yoga.

Parks

San Francisco is home to several beautiful parks suitable for many summertime activities. Take a short ferry ride and visit Angel Island State Park. There, you can enjoy the miles of hiking trails or go for a bike ride while enjoying the views of the San Francisco skyline.

Golden Gate Park also is full of activities to keep you healthy and fit, including archery, baseball, basketball, biking, boating, disc golf, fly fishing, volleyball, handball, horseback riding and horseshoes. There is also a nine-hole golf course and a dog run at the park. Consider visiting the park's conservatory of flowers, museum, the aquarium and the planetarium.

Educational Venues

Educate your mind at the San Francisco Modern Museum of Art. The museum has more than 26,000 works of art, including photography, paintings, sculptures, architecture and design, as well as exhibits featuring Modernism works.

Immerse yourself in the world of science, art and human perception at the Exploratorium. Visit the exhibits dealing with astronomy and space, culture, the Earth, the human body, vision, the mind, the material world and living things.
