Breckenridge, Colorado, is a small, charming Victorian city that is an approximate 1 1/2 hour drive from Denver. With an average of 300 inches of snowfall each year and mountain peaks topping off at 13,000 feet, there is enough snow and terrain for a wide variety of winter activities. The city offers equipment rental for most sports, and the slopes and trails are groomed for enjoyment and safety.

Downhill Skiing and Snow Boarding

For some versatile skiing and snowboarding trails, head over to Breckenridge Ski Resort. There are trails for all levels of proficiency for either of these two sports. Lessons for all level of skiers and snow boarders are available, along with a complete line of equipment to rent or purchase at the resort. With over 2,200 acres and 146 trails, you can enjoy yourself all day without repeating a run. Twenty-seven ski-lifts, some of them high-speed, stay busy transporting enthusiastic sportsmen quickly to the top of the mountains.

Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing

The Breckenridge area offers three cross-country skiing centers, each with different trails. One ticket will allow you entrance to all three. You can rent equipment, get lessons and hire a tour guide at any one of these centers. There are over 30 km of well-groomed paths, including gentle trails for beginners and higher elevation trails for the more ambitious skier.

There are also miles of snowshoeing trails for those wishing to try this gentle sport. Bring snowshoes and poles, and don't forget water to keep hydrated during your snowshoeing experience. Follow many of the same trails as for cross-country skiing, going at your own pace on well-mapped and marked trails.

Snowmobiling

Try snowmobiling and explore the back-country groomed trails and deep powder to get your adrenalin flowing. When you sign up for a snowmobile tour, you are taught the basics and safety rules to help you feel confident for your adventure. The tours are designed for different levels of ability, and there is a high guide/guest ratio, allowing some snowmobilers to head for more adventurous terrain. Dress warmly and enjoy the beautiful natural terrain while the snow sprays around you.

Ice Skating

Have fun ice skating at an indoor or outdoor rink. Head over to Maggie Pond, located in the village of Breckenridge and situated along the Blue River, where you can skate outdoors and enjoy the breathtaking views. Skate indoors at the Stephen C. West Ice Arena, which is owned by the city of Breckenridge. You can also opt to ski in their outdoor covered rink, open from September through mid-April. Conveniences such as rentals, locker-rooms, snack bar and bleachers for spectators are on-site.

Sledding

Along with snowmen-building and snowball-throwing, hop on a snow sled for family fun. Head over to Carter Park, located four blocks from the center of town. Both kids and adults can enjoy sledding as a break from other snow sports. Take a short walk to the top of the hill, hop on your sled, point it downward and fly through the snow. There are no sled rentals available, so bring your own or purchase one in one of several sport stores in town.
