Mega Performance Kayaks designed the Scarab Surf Kayak to ride the waves and pull off tricks just like surf boards. It's the middle-sized boat in the Tron family of surf kayaks. It'll suit someone who finds the smaller boat too lively and doesn't want a long boat.

Hull Design

The kayak design emphasizes power with minimal resistance. Its flat hull and low rails combined with a power-pocket rear end (a bump behind the seat that catches a wave) results in a quick boat that easily catches air when launching off the top of a wave. Tricks like aerials, slides, 360s and floaters are all within the ability of this kayak's hull shape.

Size

The Scarab is seven feet, 8-1/2 inches long and 26-1/2 inches wide. The 12-inch depth at the front of the cockpit makes for easy entrances and exits. The cockpit is 15-1/2 inches wide, which will fit even larger guys. Mega describes the size and fit as a "big guy's" air boat.

Options

Mega offers the Scarab in three lay-ups: standard, super light and x-tech. The super light and x-tech lay-ups use carbon Kevlar, which is lighter and stronger. In the x-tech lay-up, Mega uses a foam core to make the boat even lighter and stiffer. You can add a foam center pillar that helps prevent the deck from collapsing. Various fins for different conditions are available.
