A PSMF diet, also known as a protein-sparing modified fast, is an extreme diet plan. A PSMF is very low in carbohydrates and fat and is intended to promote rapid weight loss. The Cleveland Clinic suggests using this diet in conjunction with an exercise program and regular appointments with your physician so that he can supervise your progress. Speak with your doctor to determine a safe duration for this diet.

Function

The PSMF diet is purported to promote weight loss by causing your body to enter a state of ketosis. Ketosis occurs when your body is deprived of carbohydrates, and it is forced to burn fat to provide energy. In addition, ketosis may suppress your appetite.

Protein Intake

Consuming protein is vital for proper health. Protein helps maintain your skin, bones and muscles. The purpose of consuming protein on the PSMF diet is so that your body will not break down those tissues to obtain protein needed for metabolic processes. The amount of protein and calories you need to consume depends on your weight, activity level and metabolism; should consult a nutritionist for this information. Suggested healthful proteins include poultry, lean meat and seafood.

Carbohydrate Intake

Carbohydrate intake is severely restricted on the PSMF diet; your only source of carbohydrates will be low-carbohydrate vegetables. Drastically reducing your carbohydrate intake has benefits, including decreased insulin levels. Insulin is involved in fat storage, so reducing insulin levels when dieting is beneficial. Low-carbohydrate vegetables include bok choy, celery, spinach and cabbage.

Fat Intake

Minimal fat is consumed on the PSMF diet, as fat provides an alternative form of energy and interferes with your body fat being burned for energy. However, many protein-rich, healthful foods also contain fat, so stick with low-fat, or lean, protein sources such as fish, poultry and protein supplements. Other forms of fat are not allowed.

Considerations

Although the PSMF diet can help you lose weight, it may not be ideal for proper health. Although limiting fat may aid in weight loss, it will also deprive you of the nutritional benefits of fat. Dietary fat is vital for proper growth and development and it helps your body absorb nutrients. In fact, MayoClinic.com reports that certain fats can reduce your blood pressure levels and your risk of cardiovascular disease. In addition, the limited food choices may make the PSMF diet difficult and frustrating to follow.
