Zits, also known as pimples, can appear at the most inopportune times, such as before a big date or an important photo opportunity. Makeup can mask the blemish, but does not remove it completely. Popping the pimple can cause an even more unsightly blemish, in the form of an open wound or scab, and lead to scarring. According to the Mayo Clinic, bacteria on the surface of the skin and within the pore is the major cause of pimples. Cleansing methods that remove bacteria can remove or significantly reduce the appearance of pimples within 24 hours.
Step 1
Wash your face with a gentle cleanser containing salicylic acid or triclosan, both antibacterial agents, at the first sign of a pimple. Avoid vigorous scrubbing, which can irritate the skin and may cause the pimple to spread.
Step 2
Apply an astringent containing benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide helps dry up the excess oil that contributes to pimples. Use a cotton swab to gently dab the astringent onto the affected area.
Step 3
Apply a benzoyl peroxide--based spot cream to the affected area. Dab on the cream with the tip of your finger or a cotton swab.
Step 4
Wash your face a second time before bed with the same cleanser you used in Step 1. Follow with the astringent.
Step 5
Apply a bentonite clay facial mask to the affected area to absorb excess oil. Dab the mask onto the pimple; avoid rubbing. Let the mask sit until it dries, and gently rinse with warm water, followed by cool water. Follow with an astringent containing benzoyl peroxide, then a benzoyl peroxide spot cream, then a light, non-comedogenic moisturizer.
Tips and Warnings
- Benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and triclosan can all irritate the skin. If you experience swelling, redness or itching, discontinue use immediately. Avoid rubbing, squeezing or picking at the pimple. Avoid touching your face as much as possible.
