A poor diet can adversely affect a person with hepatitis C since it can potentially lead to a person having cirrhosis. The cirrhosis may be caused by a fatty liver, which is a buildup of fat deposits on the liver. Cirrhosis of the liver occurs when scar tissue replaces healthy tissue as the organ deteriorates. A balanced diet can lead to better liver functioning in a person with hepatitis C.
Carbohydrates
Patients with hepatitis C will eat a large amount of carbs from healthy sources, like whole grains. Foods that you can consume on a hepatitis C diet are brown rice, wild rice, whole wheat, whole oats and oatmeal.
Protein Sources
Protein is required by a hepatitis C patient to help fight off any infections. Lean cuts of beef, skinless chicken, turkey breast, low fat milk, low fat cheese, beans, soy, egg whites and fish can all be a part of a liver disease patient's diet.
Alcohol
Alcohol is toxic to the liver and should be completely eliminated from the diet of a hepatitis C patient
Fats
Saturated fats should be avoided when you have been diagnosed with hepatitis C. Steer clear of fast food, red meats, fried food, butter, cookies, cakes and crackers. Good fat sources can be found in nuts, seeds, olive oil and flax seed.
Fruit and Veggies
Fruits and vegetables are high in antioxidants that can help the cells of the liver fight off any damage caused by the disease. You should eat plenty of broccoli, cabbage, carrots, squash, tomatoes, oranges, grapefruit and Brussels sprouts. No added salt canned veggies can also be a part of a hepatitis C diet.
