Facts on Tooth Abscess

1. A Tooth Abscess is an Infection

A tooth abscess is caused by an infection either in the gums between the teeth or the tooth itself. It may develop from a decayed tooth. Gum disease that becomes severe can also lead to a tooth abscess. A broken tooth may also be a cause. Bacteria can get into the gums or the root of the tooth through the break and start an infection.

2. More Than a Toothache

When an abscess develops one of the first things a person will notice is pain in the tooth. The pain may be constant or only when eating. There may also be sensitivity to cold or hot foods. There may be some swelling in the gums and a blister like pocket may be seen. Pain may spread to the jaw. You may also notice a bad taste in your mouth. As with other infections there may be swollen glands and a fever.

3. An Abscess is Preventable

A dental abscess usually develops over time. Because it does not happen overnight they are largely preventable. The easiest way to prevent an abscess is to have good oral hygiene. Go to the dentist regularly, get your teeth cleaned twice a year and floss at least once a day. If you have a toothache or suspect a cavity have it checked out right away so it does not lead to an abscess. See your dentist as soon as possible if you chip or break a tooth to prevent an infection from developing.

4. Get Ready to See the Dentist

An abscess needs to be treated by your dentist. The infection needs to be removed. The treatment will depend on the size of the abscess and the location. A tooth abscess that is between the teeth may need to be drained. An abscess in the tooth may need root canal. If the tooth is severely effected it may need to be extracted. An antibiotic will likely be prescribed to destroy all the remaining bacteria. To reduce pain rinse you mouth a few times a day with warm salt water. Over the counter pain medicine is usually strong enough to alleviate the pain from an abscess.

5. Complications Rare But Serious

Most people do not get complications from a tooth abscess because they seek treatment. However complications can develop if left untreated. The main complication is the infection will spread into the bloodstream. This type of infection can be serious and would require medical treatment. The infection can also spread into the sinuses and cause a sinus infection. Depending on the location of the abscess swelling can develop in the neck which can obstruct the airway.
