New York strip steak comes from the short loin section of a cow. It is a tender cut of meat, so it is typically grilled or broiled. Although it is a leaner cut of beef, New York strip steak still contains a large amount of saturated fat, so you should eat it in moderation and with low-fat foods like grilled vegetables.
Calories and Protein
A 3 oz. serving of broiled New York strip steak contains 264 calories, all of which come from protein and fat. One serving of steak contains 22g of fat, which is 48 percent of the dietary reference intake, or DRI, for women and 39 percent for men. DRI percentages are based on daily recommendations for each nutrient. The protein in steak is made up of 18 amino acids, including all nine essential amino acids.
Amino Acids
Because essential amino acids must be obtained through food, the World Health Organization has set up daily recommendations for each one. Based on these recommendations, one serving of New York strip steak provides over 80 percent of the DRI for phenylalanine and tyrosine for a 175 lb. adult. Both of these amino acids affect the nervous system and can boost mood, reduce pain and assist memory.
Fat
One serving of New York strip steak contains 18.8g of fat, which provides 169 of the 264 calories. Forty percent, or 7.6g, of this fat is saturated fat, which can lead to high cholesterol. The American Heart Association recommends you get less than 7 percent, or about 140, of your daily calories from saturated fat. The 68 saturated fat calories in one serving of steak provide nearly half of this amount. If you also eat a baked potato with butter, your saturated fat intake would increase to 134 calories, which is nearly all of your saturated fat calories for the day.
Minerals
Although New York Strip steak is high in fat, it is also high in necessary minerals. One serving provides more than 35 percent of the DRI for zinc, which promotes reproductive system health, boosts the immune system and assists in wound healing. One serving of New York strip steak also supplies 24 percent of the DRI for iron for men and 11 percent for women.
Vitamins
New York strip steak contains a variety of B vitamins, especially B12. One serving supplies 69 percent of the DRI for B12, which supports the nervous system and assists in the production of red blood cells. One serving of steak also provides more than 20 percent of the DRI for niacin and B6 and more than 15 percent of the DRI for choline.
