An elimination diet is a natural healing tool that provides the least invasive way to identify potentially harmful foods. Foods may be causing behavioral or physical concerns that lead to ill health for a variety of reasons. Vinegars can play a role in the diet, depending upon the type and usage. Eating a well-balanced, nutritious diet can keep you healthy during this process. Check with your doctor before undertaking an elimination diet.

History

The elimination diet purports that food may be a factor in body malfunctioning, exhibited in a variety of health symptoms. The diet is a natural method used to identify foods that trigger adverse reactions. Foods are avoided for a specified time period, averaging between two weeks to two months.

Vinegar Types

Different types of vinegar exist. Some vinegars aid an elimination diet. Vinegar types include organic or inorganic, apple cider, white distilled, malt, wine, rice, rice wine, balsamic, chardonnay, fruit varieties and herbal-infused vinegars. Herb-infused vinegars include white-distilled vinegar that has been combined with spices and herbs such as garlic, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, basil and tarragon, according to The Vinegar Institute at the website Versatile Vinegar.

Vinegar Variances

Depending upon the vinegar variety, some need monitoring during an elimination diet. White distilled vinegar needs to be avoided, including those found in condiments such as ketchup and mustard. Balsamic vinegar contains sulfites and needs to be eliminated, according to holistic pediatrician, David Berger, M.D., at the Holisticpeds website. Condiments containing rice and/or apple cider vinegar are allowed in the diet.

Considerations

Not all vinegars work with all elimination diets. Elimination diets need to be tailored to medical conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome and/or fatigue, according to CFIDS website. Elimination diets including gluten-free, lactose-intolerance, vegetarian and/or vegan have different dietary requirements. Reading food labels is important during elimination diets to reveal food content and possible vinegar ingredients, according to holisticpeds.com. Focusing on whole foods can make following an elimination diet easier.

Diary

Food diaries play a major role in any elimination diet. Before beginning the elimination diet, record what is consumed and any symptoms experienced for three days, according to CFIDS of America. Once the diet begins, record how you are feeling, and what you consumed throughout the day. Record what time foods were eaten and keep a written log of physical and/or mental states. Reviewing the food diary can provide insight into how food is affecting both your physical and mental state.

Warning

Consultation with a medical professional such as a nutritionist or registered dietician is highly recommended to get your energy and nutrient level up while following an elimination diet. According to the National Institutes of Health, an elimination diet needs to be supervised by a medical professional.
