You increase your weight loss potential and decrease your risk of damaging your health by avoiding certain types of weight loss products. When shopping for products for your weight loss diet, keep in mind that the more natural and organic they are, the more effective and healthy your diet can be. Also, consider buying nutrient-rich calories, instead of “empty calories” that deprive your body of nutrients.

Artificial Sweeteners

You can find a variety of artificial sweeteners that do not contain calories or raise your blood sugar level; however, that does not mean that they help you to lose weight. An episode of "The Dr. Oz Show" has indicated that you may gain weight from eating artificial sweeteners because the sweet taste can alert your body to prepare to consume calories from sugar and your insulin reactors may activate. If no calories are given to satisfy this alerted state, your body may then begin to crave food until it is satisfied, which usually prompts people to eat other calories if not sugar. Some artificial sweeteners, like Splenda, Sweet N'Low and Equal, are sold in individual packets. They are also found as an ingredient in conventional weight loss products and labeled as aspartame or saccharin. These not only make your weight loss more difficult, but they create toxins in your body that can lead to cancer and other illnesses. Also, avoid products containing high fructose corn syrup, which may be called its new name “corn sugar.” According to the Journal of Formosan Medical Association, corn sugars are concentrated sugars with a high glycemic index that lead to insulin problems, weight gain and diabetes.

Unhealthy Fats

Slimfast snack bars and certain GNC shakes contain partially hydrogenated fats, which is another way trans fats are referred to. The MayoClinic.com recommends avoiding trans fats, because they raise your amount of unhealthy low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol while lowering your amount of the healthy high-density lipoprotein (HDL) variety. The American Heart Association warns against eating this type of fat, because it leads to obesity and raises your risk of heart disease. Trans fats have also been linked with causing cancer and have been banned in Europe. Always look in the ingredient list for partially hydrogenated oil, because it may not be listed in the trans fats section of the nutritional label if there is less than .5 g present.

Artificial Additives

Atkins and Herbalife products are loaded with artificial flavors and colors like vanillin, yellow 5 lake, yellow 6 lake and blue 2 lake. "The Dr. Oz Show" recommends that if your can't pronounce the ingredient, it is most likely a chemical product and one to avoid. Because your body is a natural organism, it needs natural ingredients to sustain an optimally healthy body. When your body is at its maximum health, it can efficiently eliminate fats. Toxins cause the liver to use fat to coat the toxins to protect your body from them. This especially occurs when your liver is saturated in toxins and is not able to eliminate all of them quickly enough; hence, they build up and store in your body as fat cells.
