How to Mentally Prepare to Lose Weight

"I'll start my diet tomorrow"--- if these are the words you say right before your head hits the pillow at night, then you may be taking the wrong approach. In order to succeed at a diet, mental planning and preparation can help you get started in the right direction.

Step 1

Select a meal plan or diet that you are going to follow and be sure you understand the expectations of the diet: How often are you going to eat a day? How many calories will you consume? What foods are off-limits? What elements of your lifestyle will have to change as a result of the diet?

Step 2

Purchase a meal journal, which can help you fully plan your daily food intake as well as record any thoughts during your day: What aspects are you particularly proud of? What challenges did you face throughout the day?

Step 3

Use your journal to make a list of the reasons why you wish to lose weight. Whether it's to better your health, lose weight, look better in your clothes or to prepare for a big event, these reasons can help to motivate you when you are questioning your dedication.

Step 4

Using these goals, establish some incentives for yourself in order to reward yourself when you meet goals. This will help you stick to your diet by giving yourself something to look forward to.

Step 5

Planning your diet ahead can help you to better mentally prepare for your diet. Writing out at least five days of meals for the week will help you to better understand what you will be eating. Purchasing these items in advance also will help set in your mind what your snacks are for Monday or what's for dinner on Wednesday.

Step 6

Establish a few positive affirmations you can say to yourself each day. Because the initial weeks of a diet can prove challenging, it's important to prepare for how and why you will succeed. Whether it's "Today I will take a better step for my health" or "I have given my best for my diet and my body today," these affirmations will present a positive spin to your mental outlook.

Tips and Warnings

  • Remember that your success in your diet depends upon your ability to succeed one day at a time. Therefore, if you face a setback one day, do not mentally beat yourself up or dwell. Instead, remind yourself to look forward. Read your goals about why you are engaging in your diet and continue your mental and physical commitment.
