New York City provides a host of fitness opportunities, from the traditional gym workouts to non-traditional sports options at outdoor parks. Throughout the five boroughs, gyms, green space and streets can all be avenues to pursue fitness activities like running, biking or walking. Prior to starting any exercise regimens, it is best to consult a health care professional to ensure it is safe for you to start regular physical activity.

Gym Workouts

There are hundreds of gyms from which to choose in New York City, and Crunch has several locations in both Manhattan and Brooklyn. Individuals can join Crunch at one location, or choose a membership that gives them membership privileges at Crunch facilities in the same city, or throughout the country, says crunch.com. In addition to typical fitness machines and treadmills, Crunch also provides a multitude of classes, including various kinds of yoga, Pilates, barre, boxing, kickboxing and dance classes, in which members can participate. Personal trainers are also available to help develop individualized fitness routines to meet the goals of gym members and provide guidance on exercise equipment.

Chelsea Piers

Though Chelsea Piers has a gym, it is much more than an ordinary gym. It is a sports complex that has several separate facilities for different sports. There is a bowling alley; a sports-specific training program called Bluestreak; a field house that provides lessons in gymnastics, soccer, basketball and rock climbing; a golf club; and an ice skating rink. Chelsea Piers also houses a basketball league, youth soccer leagues, competitive gymnastic teams and a gym that has an indoor pool, running track, sand volleyball court and boxing ring. For individuals looking to try a new sport or pursue an existing fitness interest, this is the place to find it.

NYC Fitness Coaches

NYC Fitness Coaches is a company that provides fitness and wellness programs to clients living in New York City. The company provides services in personal training, nutrition, massage, weight loss and online coaching. There is also an Employee Wellness Program that can be used to promote health and well-being in the office. Personal training offers programs in yoga, pilates, bodybuilding, sport-specific training and weight loss; nutrition programs include sports nutrition, weight loss, and health; and massage offerings include Swedish massage, Shiatzu, deep tissue, sports and chair massages.

Park Activities

New York City has several parks, including Prospect Park and Central Park. Prospect Park in Brooklyn is a 585-acre park that has a nearly three and a half-mile stretch called Park Drive suitable for bike rides, more than a dozen baseball fields, an artificial football field, a three and a half-mile bridle path for horseback riding, a tennis center, soccer fields and a volleyball court. Central Park in Manhattan is an 843-acre park that contains two ice skating rinks, a swimming pool, baseball fields, running trails and tennis courts. Fields like the Great Lawn provide space for impromptu football or soccer games, or a space to practice yoga.
