Nutritional Information for Planter's Microwave Popcorn

Planters Microwave Popcorn isn't often found on store shelves, unlike Pop Secret, Orville Redenbacher's, Jolly Time and ACT II. It contains mostly popcorn, partially hydrogenated oil and salt as well as small amounts of turmeric and annatto seeds. This product is made just like any other microwave popcorn. Just heat on high to pop the kernels.

Calories

Like all food and beverages, the calories in Planters Microwave Popcorn are based on serving size. A serving consists of 3 cups of popped popcorn and contains right around 140 calories. That's just over 46 calories per cup. Eating an entire bag, which contains three servings or 9 cups, increases the calories to 420.

Fat

A gram of fat is equal to 9 calories, so the majority of the calories in microwave popcorns come from fat, about 60 percent. A serving provides 10 g of total fat. Of these, 2 g come from saturated fat and 1 g comes from polyunsaturated fat. Eating an entire bag increases your total fat intake to 30 g, saturated fat to 6 g and polyunsaturated fat to 3 g.

Carbohydrates

A gram of carbohydrate contains only 4 calories, and another portion of the calories in Planters Microwave Popcorn, roughly 35 percent, comes from carbs. A 3-cup serving provides you with 13 g of carbs, while the bag provides you with 39 g.

Protein

The remaining calories come from protein, making up only 5 percent. In a single serving, you're getting only 2 g of protein. Eating the entire bag increases your protein intake to 6 g.

Sodium

While sodium doesn't contain any calories, it should be monitored, largely due to its potential effect on blood pressure. A serving of Planters Microwave Popcorn contains a total of 560 mg of sodium, and the bag contains 1,680 mg.

Considerations

The American Heart Association recommends keeping your total fat intake to no more than 25 to 35 percent of your calories and saturated fat to no more than 7 percent. On a 2,000-calorie diet, this translates into about 55 g to 77 g of total fat and only 15 g of saturated fat a day. If you were to eat the whole bag of popcorn, you're getting 38 to 54 percent of your total fat intake and 40 percent of your saturate fat intake in one snack alone. The AHA also suggests keeping your sodium intake to no more than 1,500 mg. A single serving contains more than 37 percent, and a bag accounts for your entire sodium intake for the day.
