Some foods are good for your health, and some foods are not. Knowing the difference between the two and choosing the healthy foods can be rewarding as these foods contribute to health, beauty and well being. When we eat well, we look well. We feel good, too, when we consume healthy foods. Foods you should avoid eating are listed below.
Processed Foods
Do not include processed foods in your diet. Foods that you purchase in stores are made with partially hydrogenated oils that contain trans fat. Consuming trans fat can put one at risk for heart disease. Do not eat foods made with vegetable shortening or margarine, and avoid eating crackers, candy, snack foods and baked foods that have partially hydrogenated vegetable oil on their label. Also avoid fried foods that you can buy at restaurants and fast food places. Trans fatty acid foods should be avoided as well. These foods include whole milk, cheese and meat such as fatty cuts of beef and pork.
High Cholesterol Foods
Avoid eating foods high in cholesterol to protect your heart from heart disease. Foods to eliminate are organ meats such as liver, the heart and kidneys. Whole milk products and egg yolks should also be avoided due to their high cholesterol content.
Certain Fish
Avoid eating fish that contains a high amount of mercury. Generally speaking, fish is healthy to eat because it is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and it has little saturated fat in it, but there are some types of fish that are not healthy to eat and can even have damaging effects on the nervous system of a fetus. Women planning to be mothers and women who are carrying a baby or breastfeeding should not eat fish such as shark, King mackerel, or tile fish due to their high mercury content, but these types of fish should be avoided by others as well. Also avoid eating fish caught in nearby waters if you are not sure if fish from local areas is safe to eat. Consult with local fish advisories before consuming these fish.
High Sodium Foods
Avoid eating foods that are high in sodium if you want to keep blood pressure down and lessen your risk for heart disease. Foods that are high in sodium include packaged and bottled foods that you buy in a store and foods you get at a restaurant. Other foods to avoid eating are salted snacks such as popcorn, pretzels, potato chips, corn chips and other types of chips. Also avoid eating foods from the Chinese restaurant that contain soy sauce.
