Herpes simplex is a virus that affects one in every four adults in the U.S., according to the Herpes Clinic website. About 1 million Americans contract the herpes simplex virus each year. Type-1 herpes simplex is responsible for cold sores on your mouth and lips, and type-2 cause recurring breakouts of sores in your genital area. There is no known cure for herpes; however, certain foods may help suppress the herpes simplex virus and reduce the frequency of outbreaks. Talk to your doctor if you plan to change your diet to suppress herpes simplex.
Lysine-Rich Foods
Lysine is an amino acid that may help control the spread of herpes simplex in your bloodstream, and may help minimize outbreaks of cold sores and genital herpes. This amino acid may help inhibit arganine, an amino acid that promotes replication of herpes simplex virus cells. Yogurt, cheese, milk, beets, apricots, mangoes, pears and apples are rich sources of lysine.
Licorice
Natural licorice contains chemical compounds that may inhibit growth of herpes simplex virus cells. It may also help reduce damage to skin tissue caused by herpes outbreaks, and may help prevent scarring. Check to make sure that licorice candies are made from real licorice root -- some licorice candies in the United States contain anise, a spice with a similar flavor. Also, check with your physician before using licorice to treat herpes. This food may deplete potassium levels in your body, which may raise blood cholesterol and promote nerve damage, according to Phyllis Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing."
Beta-Carotene-Rich Foods
Vitamin A is necessary for healing lesions caused by herpes outbreaks. It is also an immune system enhancer, and may help your body destroy herpes simplex virus cells. Your body manufactures vitamin A from beta-carotene, which is found in food sources. Boost your intake of beta-carotene by consuming foods, such as cayenne peppers, mustard greens, papaya, carrots, lemongrass, fish liver and garlic.
