Railroad Lake is in Texas about halfway between Houston and Austin. The lake area offers not just a body of water for recreation. The surrounding community is thriving with outdoor activities for you and your family and friends to engage in. While you are on a retreat in the woods, you will be able to participate in both invigorating and relaxing things to do.

Accommodations

If you are traveling to Railroad Lake, you will find a wide variety of different types of accommodations. Head over to the Artesian Park RV campground if you are coming in with that type of vehicle. Perhaps you seek more of a traditional camping experience. In that case, bring your sleeping bags and tents over to Overlook-Somerville Lake. Individuals who want to sleep in a hotel should make reservations at the Comfort Inn or Holiday Inn, both of which are located in Brenham.

Weather

Before you go on a trip to Railroad Lake, you should know what kind of weather to expect. Then you will be able to plan your outdoor activities and decide if you will be camping or not. May is the wettest month and July is the driest. During the summer months, temperatures are generally in the 90s during the day and in the 70s at night. In the winter, daytime weather is still fairly mild in the 60s, but night temperatures drop into the 40s.

Fishing

Fishing is quite popular here. Individuals with boats can dock and take off from the Lake Somerville Marina for largemouth bass, white and hybrid striped bass, bluegill, channel, blue and flathead catfish and black and white crappie. At the Big Creek Marina, you might want to go fishing for the same types, but you could also take a dive into the waters for a swim. Another option is to just set up your own little fishing station around the lake with your friends, family or by yourself.
