Sun Chlorella is a strain of Chlorella pyrenoidosa, a fresh-water green algae dense with naturally occurring vitamins and minerals, protein, fiber and omega fatty acids. Sun Chlorella USA manufactures the microscopic algae into supplement form and distributes the supplement in the United States, promoting it as a nutritionally superior species of chlorella and a superfood--a phytonutrient-rich food source capable of detoxifying the body and providing numerous health benefits.
Study Findings
A study published in 2008 in the "Journal of Medicinal Food" is one of few looking at the effects of Sun Chlorella in humans. The study showed that taking 4 grams of Sun Chlorella twice daily for 12 weeks was associated with reductions in body fat percentage and serum total cholesterol in 17 healthy subjects and 17 subjects at risk for developing "lifestyle-related illnesses." These high-risk patients also experienced a reduction in fasting blood glucose levels. The findings lend credence to those from numerous animal studies, and a few other small human studies, that suggest Sun Chlorella can improve overall health.
Preliminary Evidence of Benefit
Ray Sahelian, M.D., a nutrition expert and bestselling author, writes that other early study evidence in humans suggests Sun Chlorella may also improve fibromyalgia, hypertension and ulcerative colitis. The supplement appears to bolster the immune system--including in cancer patients, and may improve insulin sensitivity in those with metabolic syndrome (a precursor to diabetes), as well, he noted.
He cited studies by Randall E. Merchant, Ph.D., indicating these possible benefits. One of Merchant's studies, published in 2001 in "Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine," indicated particular benefit for hypertension; 50 percent of patients with hypertension who used Sun Chlorella experienced reductions in blood pressure. Sun Chlorella in that study also reduced serum cholesterol levels. Merchant concluded that the potential benefits of the supplement warrant more comprehensive clinical trials.
Anecdotal Evidence of Benefit
Among other possible benefits of Sun Chlorella, based on animal studies, anecdotal evidence and information from the manufacturer are anti-aging thanks to the beta carotene, Vitamin C and E, and nucleic acid content, which will help keep you looking younger, longer, according to Sun Chlorella USA; and weight loss, thanks to improved metabolism and reduced cravings for unhealthy food.
Detoxification, via the absorption of toxins, such as pesticides and pollutants, in the body is another benefit of Sun Chlorella. Improvements in heart health are another positive as a result of the supplement's Vitamin D and K, Omega-3 and -6 fatty acids, magnesium and potassium content. Brain health, in the form of mental vitality that might otherwise diminish with age, also benefits. Additionally, amino and nucleic acids, B vitamins, Omega-3 and -6 fatty acids, beta carotene, and Vitamins C and E may help improve mental clarity and sharpness.
Improved digestion, because of the fiber, amino acids, and Omega-3 and-6 fatty acids in Sun Chlorella has also been noted. Eye health, as a result of Vitamins A, C and E, lutein, beta carotene, and zinc benefits from a person taking Sun Chlorella.
Sexual health experiences a boost thanks to nutrients proven to improve libido, including amino acids, protein, nucleic acids, B vitamins, Vitamin E and zinc. Another area where Sun Chlorella has a positive impact is joint health, including improved flexibility and reduced joint stiffness from the action of histidine and calcium. Finally, people who consume Sun Chlorella may experience lower stress and improved mood, as a result of nutrients, such as calcium, pantothenic acid and B vitamins.
