Firehouse Subs Nutrition Information

Firehouse Subs is a fast food franchise sandwich shop with more than 400 restaurants in 21 states. Firehouse Subs differs from other fast food sub sandwich restaurants because it steams the meat and cheeses before building the sandwich, enhancing the flavor, according to the company's website. Firehouse also promises overstuffed sandwiches and friendly service.

Types

Firehouse's menu offers a number of sandwiches with firehouse-themed names. Sandwich choices include the Hook and Ladder, New York Steamer, Club on a Sub and Engineer. Firehouse also features traditional hot subs, such as smoked turkey breast, corned beef brisket and veggie. Cold sub choices include chicken and tuna salad. Each sub can be made with either white or wheat bread.

Serving Sizes and Calories

You can order your Firehouse sub as a medium or large sandwich. The highest-calorie sub sandwich on the Firehouse menu is the large serving of Beef Brisket with cheese and mayonnaise on a white sub roll; it has 1,500-calories. You can trim the calories to 580 by selecting the medium-sized Beef Brisket sandwich and omitting the cheese and mayonnaise. Lower-calorie sub options include a medium Engineer, made with smoked turkey and sauteed mushrooms, without mayonnaise or cheese for 380 calories; and a medium Hook and Ladder -- turkey and ham -- without mayonnaise or cheese for 400 calories.

Fat, Carbohydrates and Protein

The large Firehouse Beef Brisket sub has 101 g of fat, 33 g of saturated fat, 101 g of carbohydrates and 54 g of protein. High intakes of saturated fat increase blood cholesterol levels and risk of heart disease. The American Heart Association recommends limiting your intake of saturated fat to less than 7 percent of total calories, which translates into 15.5 g on a 2,000 calorie diet. The medium Engineer sub may be a healthier choice, with 5 g of total fat, 1 g of saturated fat, 58 g of carbohydrate and 31 g of protein.

Sodium

To maintain a healthy heart, you should limit your sodium intake to 2,400 mg a day. However, most Americans consume about 3,400 mg of sodium per day, according to the American Heart Association. Most of the Firehouse sub sandwiches contain high amounts of sodium. For example, the large Beef Brisket with cheese and mayonnaise contains 2,830 mg of sodium. The large Firehouse Steamer -- corned beef, pastrami, provolone, mustard, mayonnaise and Italian dressing -- on a white sub roll contains the highest amount of sodium, with 4,090 mg. One of the lowest sodium sub sandwiches on the Firehouse menu is the medium veggie on white, without mayonnaise or cheese, with 1,140 mg of sodium.

Considerations

Firehouse also offers a number of low-calorie salads, including Chief's Salad Turkey, Chief's Salad Chicken and Chief's Salad Ham. Calories for the salads, without salad dressing, range from 350 to 410 calories. Add either the fat-free ranch, with only 40 calories, or the fat-free raspberry vinaigrette, with only 45 calories.
