Atlanta was rated number 21 in America's fittest cities in 2009, according to "Men's Fitness" magazine. That's not a bad rating when you consider the number of cities in the U.S. The city has a good selection of men's health and fitness clubs, some of which are franchises, both local and national.
Traditional Gyms
Gold's Gym in downtown Atlanta is a traditional health and fitness club that's well worth trying out. Located in Peachtree Street, if you're a local resident and have not been there before you can take advantage of one of its VIP free seven-day passes and join in a high energy, dance-filled workout that will be sure to move your body and burn off lots of excess weight. All of the group fitness classes here come free with your membership, and include Boot Camp, Circuits, Body Sculpture and Ultimate Conditioning.
Local Franchises
Atlanta Fitness is a local franchise with three branches to choose from. The club is non-intimidating and offers a full range of equipment. Each of the three local branches has a childcare center where you can leave the kids while you workout. You'll find 10 different group workouts, including one for seniors. If you're a member who travels a lot you'll qualify for the IHRSA Passport Program, which gives you reciprocal membership to other clubs in the scheme.
National Franchises
LA Fitness is a national franchise health club with a number of branches in Atlanta. This is a traditional type gym offering a full range of circuit training machines and cycles and a number of group fitness classes to choose from. On its website, you can print out a free pass so that you can try the closest one out. Keep in mind that at peak hours, these gyms can be overcrowded and personal trainers may not always be available.
Martial Arts
Unit 2 Fitness is a Fitness Club that has won a number of prestigious awards, including Creative Loafing's "Best Martial Arts Gym" award in 2008 and 2009, the Sunday Paper's Reader's Choice award for Best Gym to workout in for 2009, and Atlanta Sports and Fitness's "Best cardio class" in Atlanta award. As well as having a full range of workout machines, the gym offers classes in mixed martial arts, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai boxing, capoeira, boxing, boot camp, yoga, personal training and fitness 360 group weight lifting. A local S.W.A.T. team member speaks highly of this health club. The midtown Atlanta gym is located at the corner of Ponce and Penn.
Cutting Edge
Urban Body Fitness is a gym in the traditional fashion but is also equipped with the latest cutting-edge equipment, as of 2010. Local residents are invited to experience a free week of fitness satisfaction at Urban Body Fitness, which is convinced that "once you experience all that we have to offer, you will want to join." You'll find full bios of all of its trainers on the gym's website. The club is located at 742 Ponce De Leon Place NE in Atlanta.
