If you find you have fertility problems as a woman, you may seek fertility treatments. Your doctor may recommend treatments with human chorionic gonadotropin, or HCG, along with other medications to help stimulate ovulation for proper fertilization. In most cases, MayoClinic.com reports, your physician will combine HCG with clomiphene, follicle-stimulating hormone and human menopausal gonadotropin. Some people also take HCG injections to help them lose weight, but MayoClinic.com states no evidence exists that the substance works for this problem. In either case, HCG may induce side effects.

Pain

Taking injections of HCG may cause pain. You may get headaches during and after your HCG therapy treatments, RxList indicates. Headaches classify as non-serious adverse side effects of the medication and should stop happening as your therapy continues. You also may feel pain at the injection site. While all uses of syringes for injections cause some pain, you may feel lingering pain from this type of injection. Again, this pain does not classify as serious and should end on its own. You may query your doctor about any pain from HCG that feels severe or continues.

Mental Difficulties

Human chorionic gonadotropin normally releases in a woman's body when she becomes pregnant. As with many hormones, HCG can trigger changes of your mental state. In the case of HCG, you may feel irritated. Even normal, simple things may make you irritable. You also may feel an uncomfortable need to keep moving if you experience restlessness as a side effect of HCG therapy. The most troubling mental side effect of HCG is depression. Although Drugs.com categorizes depression as a non-serious side effect that should stop as your body adjusts to HCG, you should consult your physician if it feels severe or lingers.

Fatigue

You may feel worn out and tired with HCG therapy. This fatigue may come upon you even if you already have rested and have not engaged in any strenuous activities. Fatigue, too, should fade as your body gets used to HCG.

Swelling

Injections of HCG may cause some swelling in your body as a whole or in specific areas, such as the injection site. You may gain weight by retaining fluids. Swelling may occur in your breasts, making them feel tender. Drugs.com indicates these problems should end without medical help.
