Bilberry extract has been used for centuries to treat and prevent certain medical conditions such as the common cold, coughing and diarrhea. These uses are not backed by significant testing, especially in humans. If you choose to use bilberry extract for a cold, talk with your doctor first because many herbs can interact with drugs. MayoClinic.com states that there is no cure for the common cold, but the symptoms are treatable.

Colds

Colds, or the common cold, can be caused by any one of more than 100 viruses. It results in infection that affects the upper respiratory tract. Typical symptoms of the common cold are chest congestion, nasal congestion, headache, sinus pain, a low-grade fever, fatigue and slight body chills. If you develop severe head pain, a stiff neck or your forehead becomes swollen, call your doctor immediately. These are symptoms of a more serious condition.

Treatment

The common cold does not have a cure. Your body has to fight off the infection using its natural defense system. Typically common cold symptoms are treated with over-the-counter drugs, such as pain relievers, antihistamines and decongestants. MayoClinic.com recommends increasing your liquid intake, getting plenty of rest and, using saline drops, eating chicken soup and running a humidifier in the bedroom at night.

Bilberry for Colds

Bilberry is commonly used for vision improvement, to help stop diarrhea and for chronic venous deficiency, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Bilberry extract contains tannins, a substance that has anti-inflammatory properties. Because most common cold symptoms result from inflammation in the soft tissue, bilberry extract may help alleviate typical symptoms. Bilberry is also high in antioxidants that can help strengthen the immune system and promote overall health.

Dose

AARP recommends eating 55 to 115 g of fresh bilberries three times daily. If you use dried fruit, take 4 to 8 g with water, twice daily. If you purchase bilberry supplements in capsules, follow the directions on the package or talk with your doctor about the appropriate dose for your condition.

Warning

Drugs.com warns that the use of bilberry may cause an allergic reaction. If you develop symptoms such as shortness of breath, skin rash, swelling in the face, tongue or lips, dizziness or light-headedness, call 911. You may be experiencing anaphylaxis, a rare but potentially deadly condition.
