EZ bars and barbells share more similarities than differences. These are fitness bars that can be used for a variety of exercises. Both EZ bars and barbells come in several sizes as well. The most significant difference between these two bars is the shape. For many users, that alone is the deciding factor when choosing which bar to use.

Identification

A barbell is a straight bar that is usually about 1 inch in diameter. An EZ bar is a bent barbell. The areas on an EZ bar where you place your hands are angled. EZ bars are shorter and lighter than barbells, although both types of bars are available in several lengths. Depending on the brand of the bar, both bar types offer knurled hand grips for a more secure hold.

Size

EZ bars and barbells are both available as an Olympic-style bar or as a standard bar. The Olympic version has 2-inch rotating sleeves at the ends of the bar. You use 2-inch Olympic weight plates with these bars. The rotating sleeves allow the weights to spin freely, reducing pressure on your wrists. Standard bars do not have rotating sleeves and they use standard, 1-inch plates. Barbells range in length from 5 to 7 feet. EZ bars are 3 to 4 feet long.

Function

A barbell is used for more exercises than an EZ bar. Although, in theory, you could use either bar for most exercises, the EZ bar is designed specifically for bicep curls and triceps exercises. EZ bars do not fit on a weight rack like a barbell so performing heavy chest presses would be difficult. Placing an EZ bar on your upper back to perform squats or lunges is slightly awkward and uncomfortable because of the angled bar.

Benefits

The angled handles of an EZ bar reduce stress on the elbow and wrist joints during curling exercises. Angling your hands inward places the forearm in a more natural position. You can adjust the angle by positioning your hands on different areas of the EZ bar for the most comfortable hold. Some users suggest that an EZ bar targets the biceps muscles better than a straight bar; however, this is only conjecture. In its performance analysis video of the EZ bar curl, the National Strength and Conditioning Association simply states that the EZ bar is more comfortable than a barbell for some users.
