How to Figure Out How Many Calories You Burn in a Day

Very simply put, to lose weight you must consume fewer calories than you burn each day. That means to achieve optimum weight loss with realistic goals, you'll need to know how many calories you burn doing everyday tasks like climbing stairs, cooking dinner or cleaning the bathroom. Using a calorie calculator to add these calorie amounts to those you burn while doing active exercise can help yield an accurate calorie count each day, giving you better weight loss results.

Step 1

Use a calorie calculator website to help you discern the calories burned while doing physical activities like running on a treadmill, as well as natural, everyday activities like raking leaves, carpooling and breathing. This will give you a more accurate total of calories burned each day. See Resources for a calculator.

Step 2

Enter in your weight in pounds to set the calculator to make calculations according to your own size. Set the time frame in which you completed the activity, as the longer you participate, the more calories are burned.

Step 3

Search for activities based on what you've done during the day. You can type in a search term to look for a match on the calculator, or scroll through all of the options to browse and find one that closely matches your activity.

Step 4

Click on the activity, and then click "Calculate" to get a reading of how many calories you burned during the time frame of that activity.

Step 5

Record the amount in a notebook or on a spreadsheet, and continue with each activity that you completed in a day. When finished, add together all of the calorie counts, and you'll have a tally of how many calories you burned in a day. Compare against calories consumed in a day to see how you're doing and if you are losing weight.
