Protein helps build lean muscle and promotes satiety, two reasons high-protein diets remain popular among those watching their weight. If you want to increase your protein intake without eating meat -- or the artery-clogging fat contained in animal products -- you might be interested in a replacement meal diet featuring low-fat whey powder such as the one offered by IsoWhey Complete.
Variety
IsoWhey Complete protein powder comes in four flavors: strawberries and cream, French vanilla, double chocolate and banana smoothie. You mix 1 to 2 scoops of the mix into a cup filled with 200 ml -- about 7 oz. -- of water, juice, milk, yogurt or a non-dairy beverage of your choice and stir, shake or blend the powder and liquid. You also can add IsoWhey Complete to a smoothie that includes 1 scoop of powder, 1 banana and 1 cup of skimmed milk for a meal replacement beverage that contains about 300 calories.
Calories
A scoop of IsoWhey Complete protein powder contains 116 calories. The remaining calories depend on the beverage you choose. A cup of skimmed milk will bring the total to 202 calories and add 8.4 g of protein to the 15 g of protein in the powder. You'll get some vitamin C , an extra 2 g of protein and 110 additional calories if you add orange juice to a scoop of powder. Mixing the powder into a cup of non-fat yogurt will yield a total of 226 calories and 26 g protein. Adding water or green tea -- a good source of antioxidants -- would not change the calorie count.
Vitamins
IsoWhey Complete contains several vitamins: vitamin A, found naturally in liver and whole milk and helpful in maintaining healthy teeth, bones and skin; vitamin D, obtained through sunlight and helpful in the absorption of calcium; vitamin E, found in nuts, seeds, vegetable oils, margarines and leafy greens and an antioxidant that protects you from free radicals and boosts your immune system, and vitamin C, an antioxidant that boosts your immune system and keeps your skin, bones and connective tissue healthy, found naturally in citrus fruits, broccoli and tomatoes.
Meat Alternative
If you're a vegetarian, IsoWhey Complete can help meet your daily needs for protein. Three scoops added to water will nearly fulfill your recommended allowance and two servings with skimmed milk will be more than enough to meet the 50 g of protein most people need, according to Madelyn Fernstrom, director of the Weight Management Center at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She says you should consume 1 g of protein for every 1 kg you weigh -- or 0.4 g of protein per 1 lb. If you are already getting sufficient protein from lean sources such as soy and low-fat yogurt, you do not need the protein in IsoWhey Complete.
Considerations
The whey protein in IsoWhey Complete is not suitable for someone with a milk allergy but may be fine for someone with lactose intolerance. The protein powder does not contain casein and contains just 0.6 g of lactose per serving. About 2 percent of adults and 5 percent of children in the United States suffer from true milk allergies, according to the "Washington Post." Although casein is the most troublesome allergen in milk, you should discuss with your doctor the advisability of taking IsoWhey Complete if you have a milk allergy. IsoWhey Protein does not contain any soy or gluten.
