How to Build an Archery Target

In the last few decades, archery has changed from simple recurve bows to high-tech compound equipment that deliver arrows very quickly at very high speeds. The hay bail in the back yard is no longer an option for many archers, looking for some type of target that is both inexpensive and durable. With a few simple items, obtainable at any home improvement center, a target can be constructed that will stand up to years of use.

Building the Archery Target

Step 1

Stack the 2 by 6 boards, one on the other, and align the edges. Drill four 1/2-inch holes through the 6-inch sides of the boards, each hole being 2 inches from the end, and 2 inches from each side of the boards.

Step 2

Lay the boards on edge, side by side. Insert an all thread rod through each hole in the 2 by 6 boards. Place a washer on the outside end of each all thread rod and screw a wing nut about one inch onto each end. Move the boards apart to form a frame.

Step 3

Cut the ceiling tiles into strips 6 inches across and 4 feet long using a very sharp utility knife. Stack the strips on edge in the frame.

Step 4

Tighten the wing nuts on one side of the frame to compress the ceiling tiles. Do not over tighten the wing nuts.

Step 5

Paint the ceiling tile edges with multiple squares, circles or what ever you would like. You can also tack sheet targets to the ceiling tiles.
