Small trampolines -- also referred to as mini-trampolines -- are sometimes marketed specifically for the purpose of trampoline jogging. Jogging on a trampoline has many of the health benefits of jogging outdoors or on a treadmill, and has several advantages in terms of physical stress and financial cost. However, "Medical News Today" reports that injuries from jogging trampolines are as common as those from larger trampolines; use your trampoline safely and in accordance with your health care provider's advice.
Impact
Because a trampoline has a soft and springy surface, the impact and stress on your body's joints is significantly less in comparison to jogging on a hard surface. In particular, jogging and running are notorious for having a high impact on your knees. A study reported in the June 1990 issue of the "American Journal of Roentgenology" found that jogging is a direct cause of changes in the knee joint, which are visible on an MRI directly after the jogging or running activity. If you have knee problems, or are concerned about damaging your knees through road running, a trampoline is an excellent alternative.
Cardiovascular Benefits
Like any form of aerobic exercise, jogging on a trampoline benefits your cardiovascular system and overall health. As you exercise, your pulse and breath rates will increase and your body will burn calories, strengthen and tone muscles, and improve the efficiency of your heart and lungs.
The Mayo Clinic website reports that regular cardiovascular exercise can also improve your mood, alleviate chronic diseases and aid weight loss or weight management. The stretchy surface of the trampoline provides additional intensity to your jogging workout, as you must work harder against gravity to lift your feet from the trampoline. In this way, the workout on a jogging trampoline is somewhat like a cross between jogging and a stair-stepper.
Cost
If you want a stationary option for jogging and running training at home, a trampoline is much cheaper than a treadmill. Additionally, a trampoline is more portable, lighter and takes up less space than a treadmill. A trampoline can easily be moved outside, whereas treadmills are typically cumbersome and heavy to move, and require plugging into a power outlet. Because a trampoline is not an electronic item, repair and replacement of a trampoline and its parts can be relatively simple and inexpensive.
Climate Choice
If you jog on roads, you only have the choice of exercising outdoors. In wet, wintry or very hot climates, this may be difficult. Indoor jogging usually involves either a treadmill at home, or membership at an indoor gym or fitness facility. With a mini trampoline, you can choose whether to do your jogging indoors or outdoors, no matter the weather. Therefore, you have a cheap and easy way to control the climate in which you jog.
