Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, or staph, is a type of germ commonly found in the nose or on the skin of healthy people and may result in minor skin infections, according to MayoClinic.com. These bacteria can get into your urine, blood stream and certain organs, however, and cause severe infections. Certain herbs such as goldenseal can be applied topically as an antibacterial agent to help treat this condition. Speak with your medical provider before self-treating this or any health condition.
Types
Staphylococcus can lead to several types of infections. Some of the most common types are skin infections resulting in boils, pimples, carbuncles, furuncles and impetigo. However, staph infections can also lead to life-threatening conditions such as meningitis, pneumonia and toxic shock syndrome, to name a few.
Identification
Goldenseal is a member of the ranunculaceae family and is also known as orange root, yellow puccoon, turmeric root, indian dye or eye root. According to Herbs2000, goldenseal has been used medicinally for its natural antibiotic properties in treating a wide range of health conditions including psoriasis, vaginal infections, canker sores, sinus infections and wound healing.
Properties
Berberine is the compound found in goldenseal that is responsible for killing the bacteria from staph. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, berberine may also help activate white blood cells to increase their effectiveness at fighting off infection, thus strengthening the immune system, and may be used internally or externally as an antibiotic and disinfectant.
Uses
Goldenseal is available in the form of tablets, capsules and liquid extract. To use this herb to treat staph, the University of Maryland Medical Center recommends placing goldenseal extract onto a cloth or gauze and applying it gently to the boil or infected area to disinfect the wound.
Side Effects
When taken in large amounts, goldenseal may lead to seizures, respiratory failure and possibly affect heart contractions, according to Merck Manuals. Additional side effects of using this herb can include digestive problems, uterine contractions and newborn jaundice. When used in conjunction with prescription medications or other herbs it may have adverse effects.
Complications
If left untreated, staph infections can lead to serious complications and may even be life-threatening. If you are experiencing pus pockets, swelling or pain, consult with your physician for an evaluation to prevent further complications.
