Your stomach naturally secretes acid in order to digest foods. Unfortunately, some individuals experience heartburn or reflux, conditions in which the acid of the stomach flows back into the esophagus. This can cause significant burning, pain and inflammation as the acid irritates the lining of the esophagus. If left untreated, excess stomach acid can cause permanent damage or even internal bleeding. Fortunately, natural approaches may help to neutralize the acid causing your symptoms. Speak with your doctor before using any approach to relieve symptoms related to excess stomach acid.
Step 1
Avoid eating large meals that contain a lot of fat. The risk of experiencing acid reflux increases proportionally to the amount of food eaten in a single meal. In addition, eating meals that are high in fat can slow down the emptying of the stomach, making it more likely that acid will make it's way into the esophagus. Divide the meals you eat into six small rather than three large ones, and avoid snacks that are high in fat between meals.
Step 2
Drink a cup of ginger tea three times a day. Ginger is often used to treat stomach problems such as nausea and vomiting. Additionally, ginger can treat inflammation, which can occur as a result of exposure of the esophagus to stomach acid. In lieu of tea, you can also grate fresh peeled ginger root into your favorite soups, condiments or desserts.
Step 3
Take an over-the-counter antacid that contains calcium, magnesium or aluminum salts in combination with an ingredient that will neutralize stomach acid. These medications may help relieve the symptoms of mild acid reflux. They should only be used for short periods of time, because they can cause side effects such as diarrhea when taken for extended periods.
Step 4
Eat a complex carbohydrate food with every meal. Complex carbohydrates such as brown rice and oatmeal can slow down digestion and may also absorb excess stomach acid. Keep in mind that these foods may be helpful when eaten in single serving quantities; overeating can stimulate additional production of stomach acid.
Step 5
Drink water rather than beverages such as coffee or alcohol. Beer can double your stomach's production of acid within one hour. Coffee and other alcoholic beverages and even some juices can cause increased acid secretion that can lead to reflux and heartburn. Drink at least 64 oz. of water daily in order to maintain adequate hydration, which is important for digestion.
