A treadmill can be a very useful, versatile piece of fitness equipment. Whether you are an avid runner or walker or are just trying to get back in shape and work on your endurance, a treadmill can help with all of that. While a treadmill workout can help you to build muscle and tone, it is not the best piece of equipment to use if your are looking to build a lot of bulky muscle mass. Treadmill use does have a variety of benefits worth considering, though.

Calories Burned

Make treadmill use a part of your workout if you need visual stimulation to keep you motivated. The digital monitor can tell you the number of calories you are burning in total, so you can aim for a specific number. This can be a great motivator if you need it. Knowing that your workout is actually helping you to burn unwanted calories can go a long way with even the toughest workout.

Leg Muscles

You can build muscle in your legs when walking on a treadmill. Pay attention to proper form and invest in a good pair of walking shoes for best results and to minimize the chances of injury. Increase the degree of incline on your treadmill to maximize your workout.

Cardiovascular Benefits

A good cardiovascular workout is essential to weight loss and building muscle. After all, there is very little use in building stronger muscles if they are hiding under a layer of fat. Burn fat off your body by getting in a good cardio workout on your treadmill. MayoClinic.com recommends at least 150 minutes of cardio per week, so put your treadmill to use and add a little variety to your routine.

Consistency

In many areas of the world, the weather can get in the way of your workout. This isn't the case with a treadmill. Use your treadmill to burn fat and build muscle regardless of the weather. Enjoy the advantages of walking and running without having to expose yourself to the elements, so you can exercise year-round with no excuses.
