How to Build Homemade Archery Targets

Archery has graduated from a simple outside activity with recurve bows to a modern high-tech sport with fast and hard-hitting delivery of arrows to their target. The targets of even a few decades ago are not strong enough to stop flights from some of today's archery equipment. Archers need targets that are strong, inexpensive and easy to build. With a few simple items, obtained at any home improvement center, a target can be constructed that will stand up to years of use.

Step 1

Stack the 2-by-6 boards, one on the other, and align the edges. Drill four 1/2 holes through the 6-inch sides of both boards, each hole being 2 inches from the end and 2 inches from the side of the boards.

Step 2

Lay the boards on edge, side by side about 4 feet apart. Insert an all-thread rod through each hole in the 2-by-6 boards. Place a washer on the outside end of each all-thread rod and screw a wing nut about one inch onto each end. Move the boards apart to form a frame.

Step 3

Cut the ceiling tiles into strips 6 inches across and 4 feet long using a sharp utility knife. Stack the strips on edge in the frame.

Step 4

Tighten the wing nuts on one side of the frame to compress the ceiling tiles. Do not over-tighten the wing nuts.

Step 5

Paint the ceiling tile edges with multiple squares, circles or whatever you would like. You can also tack sheet targets to the ceiling tiles.
