Herbal cleanses are useful in ridding the body of toxic build up that generate illnesses and disease. The body is naturally equipped to filter, neutralize and eliminate toxins. However, unhealthy diets, drug and alcohol abuse, long term use of medication and a lack of exercise can overload your body's system. Fatigue, allergies, sluggishness, skin complaints and arthritis may indicate toxic overload, and in such cases herbal cleanses may help. Consult your primary healthcare physician before starting any herbal cleansing program.

Significance

Your body's detoxification processing structure is made up of the circulatory and lymph systems and detoxifying organs designed to neutralize and remove excess toxins absorbed through certain foods and environmental toxins. The Laborers Health and Safety Fund of North America discussed toxic environments in an article on their website, saying that nutritionally deficient diets, over-sized portions coupled with predominantly sedentary lifestyles, have had devastating affects on the health of North Americans. Pub Med also discussed in an article the impact of pesticides on the health of people, specifically breastfeeding mothers and their children. Exposure to pesticides by way of food and the environment, Pub Med explained, can lead to neurological and mental disorders, cancers and reproductive problems.

Process

Herbal cleanses are generally geared towards the liver, lungs, kidneys and colon. After toxins enter the body via the skin, food or lungs, they go through a neutralizing process in the liver, kidneys and the lungs. Once the toxins have been neutralized, they are carried through the circulatory system and expelled by way of the lungs, colon and kidneys through carbon dioxide, stools, bile and urine. Herbal cleanses help stimulate these organs, speeding up the release of toxins from your body, while strengthening and toning them to encourage optimal functioning.

Types of Herbal Cleanses

An article on the Recover With Nature website highlighted the function of herbal lung cleansers, saying that lung disease and lung cancers may be prevented with regular use of herbal lung cleansing programs. Lung cleansers, the article explains, help strengthen the body's immune system and assist the lungs in clearing toxins from the respiratory system, while promoting the regeneration of healthy lung tissue. Herbs such as yarrow, nettles, sage and mustard seeds are utilized in herbal lung cleansers.

Liver cleanses are useful in counteracting the affects of unhealthy diets, drug and alcohol abuse, while eradicating stones and other impurities. These cleanses generally consist of herbs such as milk thistle, juices made up of cruciferous vegetables and coffee enemas.

Colon cleansers help eliminate parasitic infections and excess mucus, while ridding the intestinal tract and gut of harmful bacteria. Psyllium husks, senna, wild yam and marshmallow root are commonly used in colon cleansing supplements or herbal tea infusions.

Kidney cleansers are also helpful in dissolving kidney stones and crystallized toxins and are generally administered in the form of juices made up of fresh ginger, goldenrod, red clover and dandelion. Soaking in Epsom salts while completing your herbal cleansing can intensify detoxification by drawing toxins from your skin, which is the largest detoxifying organ of the body.

Benefits

As well as removing toxins from your body and strengthening and toning your internal organs, herbal cleanses improve the condition of your skin, boost your immune system, raise energy levels and eliminate symptoms associated with arthritis, allergies, fungal infections and asthma. They can be a great way to kick start a healthy eating program, helping your body shed excess fatty deposits and better absorb nutrients from food sources.

Considerations

Eat lightly after completing your herbal cleanse, consuming light soups and fruit juices. Make sure you follow up a colon cleanse with pro-biotic supplements to replace friendly bacteria and be sure to stay hydrated throughout the duration, drinking at least six to eight glasses of water a day. This will help flush your system of toxins. A balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, fiber and legumes will help promote continued health and well-being.
