The secret to weight management is knowing how many calories your body needs per day. By making adjustments to your calorie intake or how you burn calories each day you can control your weight.

Significance

The basis for knowing how many calories your body needs per day is your basal metabolic rate, or BMR. The BMR equation is: BMR = 655 + ( 4.35 x weight in pounds ) + ( 4.7 x height in inches ) - ( 4.7 x age in years ).

Function

There are variables alongside age that effect BMR. A 55-year-old woman, who is 65 inches tall and weighs 150 will require about 1355 calories daily to maintain life.

Considerations

Activity level also impacts a woman's daily caloric need. If the same 55-year-old woman includes three moderately paced walks per week she would multiply her BMR by 1.375. This would increase her required daily calories to 1863.

Effects

To attain weight management goals you will need your BMR and your activity factored together. This number represents how many calories are needed to maintain a current weight. To lose weight decrease daily calories and increase activity level for best results.
