Heartburn results from the backflow of acid from the stomach to the esophagus through a sphincter, or circular muscle, that regulates the passage of food into the stomach; reflux results when this muscle remains open when it should be closed. Some foods worsen reflux and thus should be avoided completely.
Foods to Avoid
The presence of food in the stomach is a stimulus for acid production; high-fat foods stay longer in the stomach and are likely to cause discomfort. Milk and dairy products, such as sour cream, ice cream, milk shakes and cheeses, have high acid content and may contribute to heartburn.
Foods to Eat
Eat foods that are high in carbohydrates and fiber; these foods can soak up excess gastric acid and they include whole grain bread, brown rice, whole wheat pastas.
Amount to Eat
Dieting options for weight loss are also better for reflux because they typically come in smaller servings; this prevents overeating. Eating too much can worsen reflux by increasing pressure in the stomach, thereby making it easier for acid to flow back into the esophagus.
