Popcorn is a quick snack that can be low in fat and nutritious. Many microwave popcorn brands, such as Orville Natural Popcorn, provide a high-fiber, low-fat and low-calorie food, compared with other snack foods. Orville Redenbacher's Natural Popcorn is offered in six flavors: Butter Salt and Cracked Pepper, Simply Salted, Simply Salted 50% Less Fat, Butter, Butter 50% Less Fat and Lime and Salt. All have similar nutrients, but the sodium content is higher in the salted versions.
Calories
The Butter variety of Orville Redenbacher's Natural provides about 90 calories per 3-cup serving. The 50% Less Fat Butter variety contains about 60 calories in a 3-cup serving. While the Butter flavor has around 30 more calories than the Less Fat variety, both are good snack choices based on the number of calories and amount of food you get.
Fat
The 50% Less Fat selection provides 3 g of fat per 3-cup portion. The original Butter flavor of the Orville Redenbacher's Natural line contains twice as much fat for the same serving size with 6 g of fat. Both of these varieties have no cholesterol. While these may seem like healthy choices because of the low fat content, at least half of the fat comes from saturated fat. The American Heart Association recommends that most of your fat should come from unsaturated fats, as these are the heart-healthy fats.
Carbohydrates and Fiber
Both the original Butter and 50% Less Fat Butter flavors contain 9 g of carbohydrates and 3 g of fiber per 3-cup portion. A good source of fiber is considered to be any food that has 2.5 to 4.9 g of fiber per serving, so a 3-cup serving of popcorn would be considered a good source of fiber.
Sodium
The Natural Butter flavor of microwave popcorn contains about 135 mg of sodium in 3 cups. The 50% Less Fat Butter popcorn has 150 mg of sodium per 3-cup portion. A couple of the Orville Redenbacher's Natural flavors have addition sodium content. The Simply Salted flavor has 195 mg of sodium, and the Butter Salt and Cracked Peppercorn flavor has 240 mg of sodium.
Considerations
Popcorn is naturally a whole-grain food because the whole corn kernel is used. A whole grain product provides antioxidants, fiber, minerals and vitamins. The USDA recommends that half of the grains you eat in a day should be whole grains.
