Trident contains a number of ingredients in its different brands that help prevent tooth decay, help rebuild the enamel of your teeth and help whiten teeth. The nutritional or medicinal value of Trident is demonstrated by its value to the health of your mouth.
Nutrition
Trident and Trident Xtra Care have only 1 g of carbohydrates per stick. Other Trident flavors contain 2 g of carbohydrates per stick. Every variety of Trident gum contains 5 or fewer calories per stick. Trident gum isn't intended to provide nutrition. It is intended to enhance your dental health.
Xylitol
Xylitol is a sugar-free sweetener. Sugars and carbohydrates that are broken down by plaque bacteria in the mouth produce plaque acids that can eat away at your tooth enamel. But xylitol isn't broken down by plaque, so it helps protect your mouth against tooth decay. According to the Trident website, research has established that people who chew gum containing xylitol have less tooth decay than those who chew gum without xylitol. People who chew gum that has xylitol five times per day have less plaque than those who don't chew Trident. The plaque they do have is easier to remove.
Enamal Protection
Trident Xtra Care helps protect the enamel in your teeth from damage by plaque acids. Trident Xtra Care contains Recaldent, which is derived from casein, a protein contained in cow's milk. The milk protein in Recaldent binds to the plaque layer on your teeth, releasing calcium and phosphate that penetrates the enamel and helps rebuild the enamel from the inside out.
Teeth Whitening
The Trident website states that Trident White gum can help whiten teeth. Clinical studies, according to Trident, have found that chewing two pieces of Trident White four times per day for four weeks can reduce stains on your teeth when used in conjunction with a healthy dental care routine. It also can help to keep new stains from forming. Trident White, as with the other Trident varieties, has cavity-fighting properties as well.
Considerations
Trident received a Seal of Acceptance from the American Dental Association for some of its flavors. The award was based on evidence that chewing those particular flavors for 20 minutes after eating stimulates saliva flow and helps prevent cavities by reducing plaque and strengthening teeth.
