Applebee's website states that they are the largest casual dining chain in the world with thousands of restaurants located worldwide. Their focus is on being part of the neighborhood and offering good food to good people. The prototype opened in Atlanta in 1980 and the first franchise came along in 1986. The restaurant offers a variety of steaks, including the menu item, Steak and Portobellos, a Weight Watchers option. Another popular steak offered at Applebee's is the House Sirloin, which is available in two sizes.
Steaks
Applebee's offers a number of different steak options on their menu. You can order steaks alone and in combination with shrimp, honey BBQ chicken and riblets. The steaks are listed by size. You can also order separate steak toppers including sautéed garlic mushrooms and grilled onions.
Calories
At 240 calories, the 7 oz. House Sirloin offers the fewest calories on the steak menu. In the middle range are both the 12 oz. New York Strip and Ribeye with 590 calories each. The Steak and Riblet Combination has a whopping 880 to 950 calories. MyPyramid.gov states that daily calories requirements differ according to age, gender and physical activity. For a 2,000 calorie diet, the 7 oz. House Sirloin would provide 12 percent of the day's calories, while the Steak and Riblet would provide 44 to 48 percent.
Fat
It's important to limit daily fat intake because certain fats can raise cholesterol levels and increase the risk of developing heart disease. MayoClinic.com recommends limiting saturated fats to less than 7 percent of the day's calories and trans fats to less than 1 percent. The Steak and Riblets contain the most fat: 47 g total fat, 19 g saturated fat and 0.5 g trans fat. Their Steak and Fried Chicken is in the middle with 31 g total fat, 8 g saturated fat and 0.5 g trans fat. The lower fat choices include the 7 oz. House Sirloin and Steak and Portobellos with 10 g total fat, 3 to 4 g saturated fat and no trans fat.
Protein
Protein is another important part of the daily diet and steak is an excellent source of protein. The USDA recommends that adults eat 6 to 7 oz. of protein, in two servings, per day. Again, the Steak and Riblets provide the most protein with 95 g, while both the 12 oz. Ribeye and New York Strip have 48 g. The Steak and Portobellos has the least with 31 g of protein.
Sodium
The body needs to ingest sodium every day to function. Penn Medicine states that adults need no more than a teaspoon, or 2,300 mg per day because ingesting too much sodium increases the risk of developing high blood pressure. All of Applebee's steaks are very high in sodium. The Steak and Riblets has an enormous amount of sodium with 2650 to 3370 mg, the Steak and Portobellos has 1610 mg and the 12 oz. New York Strip has the least with 550 mg.
