A majority of women have cellulite on their bodies, and though not serious it can be an embarrassing and unsightly issue. It typically appears around the thighs, hips and buttocks and can at times be difficult to hide. Fortunately, there are several ways to help prevent and reduce the appearance of cellulite on your body.

Cellulite often varies in severity and tends to be more visible than the fat that is located deeper in the body. Some individuals experience only a mild dimpling of fat, which tends to resemble the texture of cottage cheese, while others may notice deep peaks and valleys in the skin. It may appear on other parts of the body where fat tissue is present, such as the abdomen, arms and breasts.

Causes

According to MayoClinic.com, cellulite is caused by fibrous connective tissue that pulls against an accumulation of fat between the muscle and the skin. Approximately 80 percent of women suffer from cellulite, and this is largely due to the way fat is distributed in women. Genetics, poor eating habits, fad dieting and a sedentary lifestyle can promote the appearance of cellulite. Cellulite can also result from hormonal changes in response to taking oral contraceptives.

Treatment

The best treatment for cellulite is a healthy and balanced diet complemented by routine exercise. Staying hydrated with plenty of fluids is also a good preventive measure. Furthermore, strengthening and toning the muscles around problems areas will likely minimize the appearance of cellulite. Try moderate- to high-intensity cardio workouts like running, kickboxing or step aerobics to help burn unwanted fat.

Ineffective Treatments

Because cellulite is a permanent change in the fat stored under one's skin, miracle creams and special tonics are not likely to help reduce its appearance. Manufacturers of tights, stockings and jean have also claimed that their product will help rid the body of cellulite. While these products may help firm the skin while worn, they will not permanently change its texture. There is also little evidence to support the claims that massage or liposuction work as effective treatments. Liposuction can actually make the appearance of cellulite worse.

Considerations

Many medical professionals do not regard cellulite as a legitimate issue as it is not a sign of any serious health condition. If you have concerns about your cellulite, talk to your dermatologist about finding the best treatment for you. He may recommend specific changes to your lifestyle or suggest a more invasive approach.
