Dry eye, or dry eye syndrome, is a common and often chronic problem, especially for older adults, according to the American Optometric Association (AOA). Studies have shown that approximately 3 million women over the age of 50 suffer from dry eye. Although there is no cure for dry eye, Systane lubricant eye drops can provide long-lasting relief for the symptoms of dry eye.
Identification
The symptoms of dry eye can be a source of irritation and distraction. In addition to feeling dry, your eyes might burn; feel tired, gritty and scratchy; or you might feel like there is something lodged in the eye. Your eyes might be watery and your vision might be blurry. In an attempt to moisturize your eyes, you may find yourself compulsively blinking. Your eyes could look red and bloodshot, causing you to feel self-conscious in social situations.
Causes
Dry eye is caused by inadequate tears or poor quality of tears, according to the Systane website. There are many factors that might contribute to dry eye, such as environmental factors; aging; hormonal changes, including menopause; certain types of medications; autoimmune diseases and other health conditions. Contact lens wearers and those who have had Lasik surgery commonly suffer from dry eye. Whatever the cause, Systane lubricating eye drops might be your solution.
Solution
Made by Alcon, Systane lubricant eye drops have been clinically proved to reduce the signs and symptoms of dry eye, providing immediate, long-lasting moisture and protection. Systane is the No. 1 doctor-recommended brand of dry eye relief. Unlike most artificial tears that add volume to your tear film and provide short-term relief, Systane lubricant drops work with your tears to prevent them from evaporating, providing longer-term relief. The Systane website claims the lubricant eye drops adjust to the pH level of your tears, matching your eyes' unique chemistry. Sytane lubricant drops are recommended for contact lens wearers and should be administered before and after contact lens use. When used on a regular basis, the solution may actually increase the length of comfortable lens wear time.
Types
A variety of Systane lubricant eye drops exist to meet your unique needs. In addition to the basic lubricant eye drops, there are drops designed specifically for extended protection, for sensitive eyes and for contact lens wearers. Single-use vials are available for convenience. Generally, one to two drops are applied to eyes as needed. Talk to your eye doctor to determine which type of Systane product is right for you.
History
Alcon has been dedicated to the ophthalmic industry for over 50 years. However, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, in December of 2006, Alcon issued a voluntary recall of Systane Free LIQUID GEL lubricant eye drops in the United States, including Puerto Rico, due to the confirmed presence of mold in the product. No other Systane products were affected. Although no fungal infections were reported in consumers, Alcon removed the product from the market entirely. In response to the voluntary recall, Kevin Buehler, Alcon's senior vice president, United States and chief marketing officer at the time, confirmed that "Alcon is absolutely committed to providing the highest level of quality eye care products."
Considerations
In addition to using Systane lubricant eye drops, the AOA suggests several tips to decrease the symptoms of dry eye. Avoid becoming dehydrated by drinking eight to 10 glasses of water a day. Wear sunglasses when you are outside to protect your eyes from the drying effects of the sun and wind. Nutritional supplements that contain essential fatty acids may decrease dry eye symptoms in some people. Increase the level of humidity in the air when indoors by using a humidifier. When reading or staring at a computer screen, make a conscious effort to blink regularly. According to the Systane website, dry eye can be mistaken for other conditions such as allergies and eye infections. Rather than self-diagnose, see an eye doctor to ensure an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan.
