Psoriasis is a disease that causes skin cells to build up, creating scales and causing the skin to be dry, itchy, red or irritated. Scalp psoriasis is not a specific condition; it is a part of a psoriasis outbreak that affects different parts of the body. Psoriasis is a chronic illness, which means there is no cure and won't go away completely. You may experience changes or variations in symptoms over time. Although you may not have control over the symptoms there are steps you can take to treat your scalp until the outbreak subsides.
Step 1
Take an oral medication prescribed by your physician or dermatologist. Medications such as a retinoid or methotroxate can slow down skin cell production and suppress inflammation. Be sure to discuss taking these medications with your doctor to understand potential side effects.
Step 2
Apply mineral oil or an oil-based scalp treatment to your scalp at night. Sleep with a shower cap on to increase moisture, soften the scales and reduce inflammation. If possible wash your hair the morning after.
Step 3
Use an over-the-counter medicated shampoo containing ketoconazole, coal tar or salicylic acid. Use as directed. Avoid using products containing alcohol or fragrances; these products can cause additional dryness.
Step 4
Use an ointment, gel or foam containing coal tar or vitamin D (Anthralin or Tazorac). It is best to use these treatments in conjunction with a medicated shampoo (mentioned in the above step). Regular shampoos sometimes contain chemicals or fragrances that can exacerbate symptoms.
Step 5
Try to avoid scratching the dry patches on your scalp to prevent further irritation or infection. Massage your scalp gently with your fingertips, not your nails, to relieve the itching.
