Slow metabolism is typically caused by underproduction of hormones secreted by your thyroid gland. These hormones control the rate at which your body converts fats, carbohydrates and proteins into energy. Poor hormone production can produce symptoms such as chills, headaches, impotence and obesity. Natural remedies may help increase your thyroid's production of hormones, speeding your metabolism.

Sea Vegetables

Sea vegetables are rich sources of iodine, which is a major component of thyroid hormones. Increasing your iodine intake may help stimulate thyroid hormone production, improving your body's ability to metabolize nutrients. Kelp, wakame, dulse, kombu and nori are all sea vegetables that provide iodine.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids that promote the production of healthy brain and nerve ending cells. These fatty acids may also stimulate your thyroid and increase your body's metabolism, according to Dr. James Balch and Mark Stengler, authors of "Prescription for Natural Cures." Mackerel, tuna, walnuts, flax oil and flaxseeds are abundant sources of omega-3 fatty acids.

Black Cohosh Supplements

Black cohosh is an herb that was used by the Algonquian Indians of North America as a remedy for fatigue, arthritis and rattlesnake bites, according to Michael Castleman, author of "The New Healing Herbs." the chemical compounds contained in black cohosh may also help reduce inflammation of your thyroid gland, improving this gland's ability to produce metabolism-stimulating hormones. However, talk to your doctor before using supplements containing black cohosh -- this herb may produce side effects such as dizziness, diarrhea and vomiting.

Avoid Goitrogens

Certain vegetables contain chemicals called goitrogens, which may suppress thyroid function and slow your body's metabolism, according to Balch and Stengler. These vegetables include soybeans, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kale, broccoli and cauliflower. Avoid these vegetables to help boost your metabolism.
