How to Use a Tens Machine During Labor

The TENS machine, also known as transcutaneous nerve stimulation, is a machine that uses electrical impulses to treat pain. Normally used in patients with arthritis and cancer, the TENS machine is also used to relieve labor pains during the birth of a baby. According to Drug Information Online, the TENS machine can convert pain to a tingling sensation. Endorphins (the feel-good chemicals in the brain) can also be released during electrical stimulation.

Step 1

Go to your doctor, midwife or doula and check to see if they have a TENS machine before your due date. Rent a TENS unit if one is not available.

Step 2

Discuss with your doctor whether using a TENS unit is safe for your pregnancy.

Step 3

Check the TENS machine before using by fully charging the battery and turning the knob to the "off" position before using.

Step 4

Clean the mother's back with rubbing alcohol and dry it well.

Step 5

Apply a small amount of gel to the TENS machine's electrodes. This allows the electrodes to send electrical signals to the nerves (bundles of fiber in the muscle).

Step 6

Place the electrodes on your back and tape them to the skin. Make sure the electrodes are distributed evenly across the back to increase relief.

Step 7

Connect the electrodes to the wires and connect the wires to the TENS machine.

Step 8

Turn the control knobs to the "on" position and adjust the electrical signaling knob to your doctor's recommended setting and you should feel a tingling sensation on your back.

Step 9

Place the TENS unit in your pocket so it stays secure during your labor.

Step 10

Turn the TENS machine to the "off" position after the birth of your baby.

Tips and Warnings

  • Tell your doctor if you notice muscle twitching in your back. This means too much electrical activity is stimulating your back and the knobs on the TENS machine must be tweaked. Let your doctor know if you experience no tingling at all. This means the electrical signals reaching your back aren't strong enough. If labor lasts for more than one day, be sure to remove the electrodes and clean your skin at least once before using the TENS machine again.
  • Do not use a TENS machine during a water birth. Do not use if you have a pacemaker.
