Step 1
Apply a hydroquinone cream. Available over the counter, this is effective at fading dark spots on the skin. It is not as strong as other forms of treatment, and it may take up to six months to notice results.

Visit a dermatologist for a prescription cream. Dermatologists have additional resources available for lightening the skin. Prescription creams containing various exfoliating agents and lightening ingredients that are more effective at lightening skin than hydroquinone. These creams often contain kojic and azelaic acid as well as tretinoin. The dermatologist may also prescribe a topical steroid cream as well.
Step 3
Consider a chemical peel. After trying a topical cream unsuccessfully, your dermatologist may recommend a chemical peel. Chemical peels use a chemical solution, typically alpha hydroxy acids or trichloroacetic acid, to exfoliate the skin, which fades dark patches.
Step 4
Treat stubborn cases with laser resurfacing. Laser resurfacing can be effective even on stubborn cases of melasma and can lighten the skin. The physician directs the laser energy at the area that needs treatment. The procedure is uncomfortable and typically requires a local anesthesia. The laser simultaneously destroys the outer damaged layer of the skin and stimulates growth in the underlying layer. It takes several months for the skin to heal after this procedure and up to one year to see the final results.
