The goji berry grows on a vine that can reach heights of 20 feet. In Tibetan societies, this berry is grown in protected wild farms. The vine grows berries that are picked in the fall months. They cannot be handled with bare hands because the skin of the berries will oxidize and cause bruising. After they are picked, they will dry in shaded areas. In this raw state they are combined in trail mix varieties for snack consumption. Adverse reactions have not been observed with this berry, but side effects can occur.
Increased Bleeding Time
People who are on blood thinning medications such as warfarin may have increased bleeding times if also consuming raw goji berries. This has been measured in an international normalized ratio, or INR, test, according to the Drugs.com website. If INR is elevated in a blood test, that means the blood is thinner. Thin blood tends to coagulate slower when you are cut or scraped. If you are on a blood thinner, consult with your health care professional or a nutritionist to evaluate food interactions.
Low Blood Sugar
Hypoglycemia may occur in individuals who eat raw goji berries. This is a condition when the sugar levels in the blood drop. A particular extract in goji berries called glycocojugates may cause this hypoglycemic effect, according to Dr. Ray Sahelian. When sugar levels drop, a person may have signs and symptoms of fatigue, nervousness and irritability. Stop eating goji berries if this occurs. It is wise to discuss these issues with your health care provider if symptoms persist.
Atropine
Atropine is an alkaloid component found in goji berries. They contain trace amounts but atropine can manifest side effects. Atropine is used for a wide spectrum of medical purposes. In surgery, it is administered to dry up secretions in the mouth and to relax the smooth muscles in the lungs, according to the USDA website. It is possible that one may experience a dry mouth and nose if consuming a lot of raw goji berries. Thirst can also be an issue. If these symptoms persist, a health care provider should be contacted.
