Glycolic acid peels are a type of chemical peel that gets rid of the outer layers of your skin to diminish signs of aging, sun damage or acne scarring. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, this procedure will give you a smoother, more uniform-looking complexion. However, glycolic acid also can irritate your skin and make it more prone to sunburn. A dermatologist can help you decide if this procedure is right for you.

Function

Glycolic acid is a fruit acid that belongs to the family of alpha hydroxy acids. These acids work by dissolving the bond between skin cells, stimulating the older ones to fall off and revealing the fresher, more even-toned ones underneath. When used over a long time, glycolic acid penetrates deeper into your skin and may generate the production of collagen and elastin, the components of firm, youthful skin, according to DermNet.NZ.

Benefits

By ridding your skin of dead cells, glycolic peels improve the look of a complexion damaged by the sun; this includes reducing the appearance of age spots as well as fine lines and wrinkles. It can also help diminish acne scars and refine your skin's overall texture, smoothing out areas of dryness and evening out sections of blotchiness, notes the American Academy of Dermatology. Your face should look fresher and more radiant after a glycolic acid peel.

Application

You can purchase an over-the-counter glycolic acid peel or have it done in-office by a dermatologist. If you do this yourself, wash your skin with a mild cleanser to get rid of dirt and oil, dry off and then smooth on the glycolic peel to the areas of your face you wish to treat. Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes, or as indicated by the package instructions or your dermatologist's directions. The peel may sting while it is on your face, but this will stop once you wash it off with lukewarm water.

Considerations

Your face may become red or swollen after a chemical peel is applied, but DermNet NZ states that this will typically subside within 48 hours after the procedure. Your skin also might flake or peel for up to a week after you use glycolic acid. Smooth on a mild moisturizer to lessen any discomfort.

Warnings

Do not scratch or pick at any flaking skin that results from a glycolic peel, as this can delay healing time and could even cause scars to form. After your treatment, it's critical to wear sunscreen whenever you are exposed to sunlight, because glycolic acid makes your skin more prone to burning. If you notice any severe reactions, such as persistent flaking, burning or stinging, see your dermatologist immediately.
