In homeopathic medicine, the individual is the focus instead of the disease so the physical, mental and emotional state are all taken into account when chosing a remedy. Remedies are made from diluted plants, animals and minerals that are intended to stimulate the body to heal itself.
Derived From Plants
Aconitum napellus
Derived from the plant monkshood, aconitum napellus is used for flu or cold-like symptoms that appear suddenly, often accompanied by anxiety.
Arnica
Arnica, from the mountain daisy, is a common homeopathic remedy for bruises, trauma and muscle soreness.
Coffea cruda
Coffea cruda is a tiny dose of coffee, used for insomnia and toothache.
Gelsemium sempervirens
Gelsemium, from the yellow jasmine plant, is used for flu, fatigue and headaches. Emotional states that may accompany these symptoms are apprehension and difficulty concentrating.
Ignatia amara
Ignatia amara is used for stress, grief and irritability, as well as the headache and muscle spasm that may result from nervous tension. It is derived from the St. Ignatius bean.
Ipecacuanha
While regular ipecac is used to induce vomiting, the homeopathic version is used for the opposite reason---to treat nausea and vomiting.
Ledum palustre
From the wild rosemary plant, ledum palustre is used for puncture wounds and insect bites.
Lycopodium clavatum
People needing lycopodium will often exhibit symptoms on the right side. Physical symptoms include constipation, bloating and indigestion accompanied by arrogance and irritability. Lycopodium is derived from club moss.
Nux vomica
Nux vomica, from the poison nut, is often used for hangovers because of its effects on heartburn, cramps and upset stomach. It can also be used for insomnia and stress.
Pulsatilla
Used for sinus issues, menstrual issues and varicose veins, pulsatilla is made from the wind flower. Physical symptoms are often accompanied by sensitivity and a need to be liked.
Rhus toxicodendron
Because rhus toxicodendron is derived from poison ivy, it is used to treat rashes due to poison ivy exposure. It is also used to treat arthritis, muscle pain and flu.
Symphytum officinale
This remedy, derived from the comfrey plant, is used for traumas such as eye injuries and fractures.
Derived from Animals
Apis mellifica
Apis, which comes from the honeybee, is used for rashes, itching and allergic reactions.
Lachesis mutus
Made from the venom of the bushmaster snake, lachesis is used primarily for women's health issues like PMS, menopause and ovarian cysts, especially when issues are on the left side of the body. Mental states that may accompany symptoms are jealousy and talkativeness.
Sepia
Sepia, from cuttlefish ink, is used for menstrual and menopausal issues. Those needing this remedy often exhibit depression, irritability and lack of libido.
Derived from Minerals
Arsenicum album
Arsenicum album is a minute dose of white arsenic, used primarily for diarrhea, gastrointestinal distress and chills. A person needing arsenicum may also feel anxious and restless.
Ferrum phosphoricum
While it is derived from iron phosphate, ferrum phosphoricum does not provide a large enough dose of iron to be used as a source of iron supplementation. It is, however, sometimes used in cases of anemia, as the minute dose may encourage the body to increase its uptake of iron from food. It is also used for colds that come on slowly, fever and cough.
Sulphur
Commonly used for skin conditions, sulphur is also used for digestive issues and headaches. It is made from brimstone.
